Certain tracts of land lying in and situated in Marion Co., mentions mountaintop near Standifer's Cove. Defendant Joseph Lewis was affiliated with the Sequatchie Mining and Manufacturing Co. Map of the disputed lands included - mentioning George Lowery reservation, Betsy Pack reservation, Moore's Grant, John Lowery reservation, "Rutledge lands appropriated entered December 1820, surveyed June 1821, granted Sept. 1831." 1855 State v. John D. Lowery Roane Other Lowery charged with blasphemy for uttering words considered to be to the "great scandal and reproach of the Christian religion". Grand jury witnesses: Benjamin Crenshaw & his 12-yr-old son Samuel, who said Lowery came to the house to have Ben whip Samuel, who had spoken saucily to Def's mom (he had apparently told her to kiss his posterior, but used a more vulgar term), & Def said if Jesus Christ himself spoke that way, Def would strike him or knock him down. 1855 Benjamin H. Brown v. John D. Lowery Roane Trespass with Force of Arms "a plea of trespass with force and arms to his damage one thousand dollars." Incident of 12 Aug. 1833, "with force & arms made an assault upon the person of said plaintiff . In the county & state aforesaid and then with his fist, a rock & some other weapon, gave & struck the said plaintiff a very violent blow & stroke on the front part of the head thereby falling & knocking the said plaintiff down to & upon the floor ." 1851 Thomas Crutchfield, Esq. v. John McGhee, Esq., William Lowery & Hilton Humphreys McMinn Injunction Case sought to nullify a sale from Lowry to McGhee in order to satisfy debts due to Crutchfield. Lowry & McGhee were accused of setting up a pretend conveyance in order to protect Lowry's land from his creditor. Lowry owned slaves called Jim, Newton, Gilbert, Bill, John, Esther, Albert, Hannah, Amanda, Rhoda, Henry, Margaritt, all named in a detailed conveyance to Samuel H. Jordan. 1850 Samuel Henry v. William Lowery, William McTur & Moses Keys, exec.'s of John Keys dec. Blount Debt In 1836, Henry was security in a bill executed by John Keys & Wm. Lowery payable to James Houston for $716. 1842, a judgment against defendants & plaintiff was granted to Houston in this amount for non-payment of bill. This case established that Henry has already satisfied his obligation, having paid the full $839.20 (original judgment + interest); Henry sought to recover this from William Lowery. 1844 Philip Neale v. Michael Tarten (?) Hawkins Property Dispute In 1782 North Carolina granted Lowery said tracts of land. Lowery sold and conveyed the land to Campbill. Campbill sold the land to Hopkins. Hopkins sold to defendant. Plaintiff and defendant have a boundary and title dispute over the property. Historical Note: land granted prior to TN becoming a state.
