1858 | George P. Rutledge v. William W. Lawrence | Blount | Other | Rutlege sold tract of land to Stone in Blount Cty for $10,000. Lawrence purchased land from Stone and became paymaster of $5000 of the note. However, TN was part of the Confederacy at the time of Lawrence's purchase. Confederate Gen Kirby Smith, called for the arrest of any who refused payments of CSA currency. Lawrence offered Rutledge a partial payment in US dollars, and the rest in CSA. Complainant felt he was coerced. Cause: sale under duress. See box ET 17 also. | East |
