1893 Stewart, Ralph & Co. v. F. P. Gracey & Brother Montgomery Debt Stewart, Ralph and Co. was comprised of Robt. Stewart, Alex Ralph, Jno. W. Woodside and Saml. Hendrickson. F. P. Gracey and Brother was comprised of F. P. Gracey and Matt Gracey. Plaintiffs were manufacturers of "snuff," in Philadelphia, PA. They purchased a lot of tobacco in Clarksville, Tennessee and contracted with the defendant to store it in their warehouse. Road was described as the main road running between Bud's Creek and Palmyra. The road was originally constructed by a furnace company for hauling charcoal and ore. 1893 Louisville and Nashville Rail Road Co. v. Mrs. A. S. Jordan Montgomery Damages Plaintiff owned a railroad line running through the property of the defendant. The line was purchased by the plaintiff in 1859 from the Memphis, Clarksville, and Louisville Railroad Co. and included right of way through said property. Plaintiff also claimed right to 100 feet extending from either side of the road. Plaintiff complained that the defendant blocked access to the 100 ft. right of way and brought suit. The property in controversy was located in the 19th Civil District of Montgomery County. Middle Range: 36

1893 Lena M. Ragsdale v. Lewis A. Ragsdale Montgomery Divorce Plaintiff brought suit seeking a divorce from the defendant and a decree granting a previously promised interest in a $25,000 note. Plaintiff claimed that defendant was physically abusive and stated that he threatened her life several times. The defendant received a large estate from his father and was perhaps worth up to $200,000. He originally lived in Meridian, Mississippi but moved to Clarksville with his wife where he invested in trotting horses. Middle Range: 36

1893 L. Gauchat v. J. F. Wood Montgomery Obstructing a Public Road/Road/Right of Way Plaintiff and defendant were neighboring business owners in the City of Clarksville, Tennessee. Plaintiff was the owner of a mercantile jewelry, silverware, watch, and clock business, and the plaintiff was the owner of a mercantile hardware, agriculture, stove, and tin ware business. 1893 J. E. Fort v. N. L. Northington Montgomery Debt Plaintiff issued a note to J. G. Warfiled for $206 and made several payments. Warfield died around 1881 and the note fell into the hands of the defendant as administrator. The defendant filed a bill for the balance of the note but was awarded twice the principal and interest due. 1893 Henry Lurton (col.) v. A. R. Gholson Surviving Partner, et al. Montgomery Injunction Additional defendants: J. M. Collier, Mattie Smith, W. J. Smith, J. P. Dunlop and wife Laura Dunlop, Charles Smith, and Earl Smith. A. R. Gholson was the surviving member of Smith and Gholson (which also included C. G. Smith). 1893 Bruce L. Rice, admr. of William Newbern, dec. v. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Co. Montgomery Damages In 1892 William Newbern, an employee of the defendant, was struck by a train in the town of Clarksville. He died from the resulting injuries, leaving a widow and six children. Plaintiff brought suit for damages as the administrator of Newbern's estate. The defendant claimed Newbern was intoxicated at the time of the accident. 1893 Abe & Pomp Thompkins v. State Montgomery Trespass The plaintiffs in error are accused of entering the property of S. B. Seat and tearing down fences and gates. The fence in controversy was built across "Old Seven Mile Ferry Road," which runs through Seat's property. Seat claims the road was no longer public but that is still occasionally used as a "shun," road to avoid a nearby toll-gate. Seat and the plaintiffs are neighbors. The First Colored Baptist Church, organized in the 1860s, is described as being the oldest "colored," church in Clarksville. 1892 W. G. Russell v. T. W. Lewis, admr. Montgomery Sale of Land/Property This bill was filed against the estate of W. T. Lewis, dec. Plaintiff alleged that he exchanged a plot of land with deceased for other plot. W. T. Lewis was to pay plaintiff the difference between the two tracts of land. 1892 W. C. Dibrell v. The Citizens Building & Loan Association et al. Montgomery Injunction Additional defendants: A. Howell and James T. Wood. In order to secure the payment of a $500 note J. J. Rye executed a mortgage conveying a house and lot to the Citizens Building and Loan Association. Rye then sold said property to the plaintiff who assumed Rye would pay the balance due to the association. 1891 The Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company v. G. L. Pitt admr. of Newton Sullivan Montgomery Damages Defendant in error is sued for damages related to the death of Newton Sullivan. Sullivan was employed by the plaintiff in error and on the day of his death was traveling on a train owned by the plaintiff to his work area. Sullivan was instructed to wait until the train neared the job site and then he and the other men traveling with him were to jump off. Montgomery Damages Plaintiff was a section hand employed by the defendant to work on their railroads and was injured after jumping from a handcar on which he was a passenger. Defendants are members of a tobacco board of trade responsible for disputes among purchasers and sellers and reclamation.
