1880 State v. Aleck Kirby Montgomery Assault with Intent to Kill Aleck/Alex Kirby, a man of color, was charged with attacking G. Holloman, police officer, with the intent to commit manslaughter. Kirby was initially arrested by Holloman for disturbing the peace. Holloman claimed that Kirby threatened violence against him. Holloman pulled out his gun and there was a scuffle. A crowd formed. Holloman claimed Kirby got loose and threw an object at his head. He dodged it. Middle Range: 20

1877 John B. Taylor v. Alex Smith Montgomery Default on Promissory Note Taylor borrowed $723.45 from Smith and executed a note to him payable in Sept. 1874 with a 10% interest rate. Taylor also signed over a deed of mortgage for a 226 acre property that the plaintiff owned. If the note was not paid, the defendant was entitled to sell the land for repayment. However, the defendant never indicated he wanted his money when the deadline arrived or that he was selling the land. The plaintiff asked for an injunction to prevent the sale. Middle Range: 37
