1903 P. T. Buckingham v. Robert Steele Montgomery Land P. T. Buckingham bought land from Robert Steele for $1,600 to be paid in four years. Buckingham was to pay $100 per year for rent for the farm in case he failed to pay the amount he owed. Buckingham used the land for four years, but only ever paid around $400. Steele agreed to take back the land after Buckingham asked, but Buckingham brought this suit to recover what he had paid for the land, and for the improvements made to the land while it was in his possession. 1903 A. R. Gholson, et al. v. Rebecca Janie Griffey Montgomery Land and Title Dispute This bill was filed by A. R. Gholson and C. B. Lyle to remove a cloud from their title to a tract of land. It involved the construction of a deed executed by William Griffey (dec.) to his grand-children to convey the land to them and all other children of his son, M. Griffey. Rebecca Janie Griffey, the daughter of M. Griffey, was claiming one-half interest on the property according to the deed. This case was to remove her claim as a cloud on plaintiff's title. Hadley, who died in 1899 with a life insurance policy with the Woodman of the World. B. F. took the policy before he was married and never changed the policy to make his wife the beneficiary. 1901 Henry Tyler v. J. R. Cunningham & Co. Montgomery Failure to Pay Plaintiff raised a crop of tobacco on the farm of J. H. Ferguson. Ferguson contracted with the defendant for the sale of the crop, though plaintiff did not authorize him to sell. Agreeing with the price, though, plaintiff accepted the contract and delivered the tobacco, notifying defendant that they must pay him his half. They paid his half to Ferguson instead. 1901 Doc [Dock] Martin v. State Montgomery Murder, 1st degree Victim: Lena Martin, plaintiff's wife. Plaintiff got Lena pregnant, was arrested on bastardy charges, and married her while under arrest. He and Lena lived together for one month; then he moved in with Laura Bush, and Lena and the baby moved in with her parents. On the morning of the killing, Lena left home to go tend to her husband's stepmother, who was sick. Her body was later found in a gulley with gunshot wounds in the head. 1901 Ben Childs and wife v. E. F. Dennis Montgomery Deed Dispute Dennis, a "colored" preacher, lived with Childs and his wife, Lizzie Childs, for a number of months while preaching in their area. Childs was having a difficult time making ends meet, and Dennis agreed to pay off the mortgage on their home. The deed was executed to Dennis and legally in his name, while Childs would pay him back over time.
